A CSPO is a certification issued by Scrum Alliance for their product owner role. It is the entry-level certification of a product owner. The job of a CSPO is to manage the business aspect of a product in a company. The CSPO certification renewal must be done every two years because the certificate is valid for two years only.
The Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) refers to the certification professional Product Owner role defined in Scrum, which is a framework for complex product development. A CSPO is responsible for maximizing the value of a product resulting from the work performed by the development team. As mentioned before, the CSPO certification is valid only for two years. Hence, it should be periodically renewed.
By doing so, you will be adept and up to date about various Scrum and Agile methodologies, learn new things that are relevant to the industry and the Scrum community, and ensure that you always stay in the loop. This is the main motive behind the limited validity of a CSPO certificate.
The cost and requirements of renewing your CSPO certificate vary depending on your level. The table shown below explains this clearly.
Certification | Scrum Education Units (SEUs) Required | Renewal Fee in USD |
Foundational CSPO | 20 | 100 |
Advanced CSPO | 30 | 175 |
Professional CSPO | 40 | 250 |
The Scrum Educational Units (SEUs) are based on 1:1 ratio of contact hours to points. This means that the number of contact hours linearly translate into the number of SEUs.
There are many ways to earn SEUs and get your CSPO renewal done. For example, you can earn a maximum of 24 SEUs by attending a Scrum Gathering and participating in it for three entire days.
The Scrum Alliance sends you a reminder to get your certificate renewed 90 days before the expiration date via your registered email address.
You do not have to appear for any examination to renew your certificate. You are required to submit a predetermined number of SEUs to Scrum Alliance by logging in to your certification account along with a predetermined renewal fee as mentioned in the above table. Your certificate will be valid again for an additional two years after successful renewal.
