Scrum has evolved into a popular methodology which has been adopted by companies worldwide. I have seen many firms hire Scrum Masters for the singular purpose of ensuring firm-wide adoption of Scrum principles. Their intention here is to benefit from shorter version releases in the market.

Scrum Master helps teams work better and faster by correctly using concepts learnt in the Scrum Methodology tutorial. I have seen at my workplace that this role is key in ensuring that projects succeed and the company becomes more productive.

After going through a well-developed Scrum Master tutorial, the expert can help others align their working culture as per the Scrum best practices

What is a Scrum Master?

A Scrum Master helps the team grasp the concepts and practices of this modern approach in software development. They assist the team by getting rid of barriers that come in the way of smooth project execution. These certified professionals help make projects easier to manage among disparate teams. In my opinion, they are also responsible for ensuring that the development team follows Agile principles. At my office, I have also acted as a coach. With my training I am able to help the team perform at their peak potential.

Understanding Scrum Artifacts

Scrum artifacts are essential tools that deliver key information to the Scrum team and stakeholders. They ensure transparency and enable a shared understanding of the work. These are the three main artifacts in Scrum Master tutorial -

1. Product Backlog

This is a dynamic list of

  • requirements,
  • features,
  • enhancements and
  • fixes.

When the development team fixes these points, they can enable successful project execution. The product owner is accountable for maintaining and prioritizing these items.

2. Sprint backlog: This is a subset of the Product backlog. It is selected for a specific sprint. It includes the items that the development team commits to completing during the sprint. It also has a plan for delivering the product increment and achieving the sprint goal. It is continuously updated during the sprint.

3. Increment: This is the sum of all the product backlog items achieved during a sprint. It also has the value of the increments of all the previous sprints. It must meet the Scrum Team's definition of done. This is to ensure quality and completeness. Each increment is built on the previous ones to facilitate continuous progress towards the product goal.

Understanding Scrum Events

Scrum events are structured meetings designed to facilitate collaboration, transparency and inspection. They help to create a regular cadence. They provide opportunities for the Scrum team to plan, review and adjust their work.

Let us check out the five main Scrum events in the Scrum Master tutorial -

1. Sprint: The heart of the Scrum is a Sprint. It is a time boxed period that usually lasts between one to four weeks. This is the time during which work is completed and is ready for review.

2. Sprint Planning: At the start of each Sprint the team conducts a Sprint Planning meeting. According to me, this meeting is needed to determine what can be delivered in the forthcoming Sprint and how the work will be achieved.

3. Daily Scrum: This is also known as the Daily stand up. This is a short time boxed meeting which usually lasts for 15 minutes. It is held every day of the Sprint. The Development Team shares updates on their progress and discusses what they plan to achieve before the next Daily Scrum

4. Sprint review: This is held at the end of the Sprint. The Sprint Review is an informal session where the Scrum Team and stakeholders inspect the increment and discuss what was accomplished during the Sprint.

5. Sprint Retrospective: This is held after the Sprint review and before the next Sprint planning. This is the time when the team can reflect on the past Sprint. They can utilize this experience to improve their work and process.

Top Tools for Scrum Masters

There are many factors that impact which Scrum tool is best for your project. Some factors include the structure and size of your team and the complexities of your project. Here are a few you should know of in the Scrum Master tutorial

1. Jira: Agile software development teams have one preference: Jira tool . It has templates to help with efficient sprint planning and backlog reduction. The solution helps segregate large projects into smaller, more doable tasks. The tool also offers real-time visual status updates. This view lets teams react swiftly to issues and changes. Jira comes with always-current task scheduling and tracking. This way, it facilitates the smooth operation of geographically scattered and remote teams.

2. Trello: This solution has an intuitive and highly visual project management interface. Such a design helps small teams by tracking sprints and automating repetitive tasks. Plus, it integrates with widely used programs like Slack. This makes Trello a viable solution for Agile teams.

3. Confluence: You can store all of your documents and associated data in one central location with Confluence. Collaboration can be streamlined and knowledge management can be easily integrated into the product development lifecycle. You can do this via customer surveys and requirements documents. Even product strategies and other supporting data can be of help here.

It is a challenge to manage a large self-organizing team, due to varying goals and opinions. The Scrum Master often has to handle conflicts between team members and the project manager.
