Scrum is an Agile development methodology used to create large projects, most frequently software. Sprints, short development cycles used in the Agile project management technique, lead to continuous product or service improvement. There are numerous Agile frameworks, and Scrum is a well-liked choice for projects that move quickly. The Scrum Master's competence determines process outcomes, which depend on the methodology's high degree of collaboration, and the requirement for effective processes.

What is a Scrum Master?

A Scrum Master is a qualified individual who guides a team through a project while utilizing Agile project management. To ensure a successful output, a Scrum Master encourages all team members, ensures leadership engagement, and manages communication. The facilitators of Scrum, a simple, agile framework with a focus on time-boxed iterations known as sprints, are termed Scrum masters. Scrum masters serve as coaches to the rest of the team - as facilitators or, in the words of the Scrum Guide, as "servant leaders." Good Scrum Masters uphold the Scrum philosophy and its core principles while remaining adaptable and being receptive to chances for the team to streamline its processes.

Responsibilities of a Scrum Master:

A team would be in charge of its tools and processes in the ideal Agile world. However, we've discovered that many teams making the switch to agility frequently look to the Scrum Master to be the owner of their procedure. It takes time for authority and responsibility to spread throughout a team. The work schedule of a Scrum Master may vary from being as minimal as arranging the Scrum ceremonies or as engaged as any other Scrum team member. Although the Scrum Guide specifies the functions of the Scrum Master, this is not a complete list of duties. Indeed, we observe that these are some or all of the roles and responsibilities of scrum master:

  1. Standups - As required, lead daily standups (or the daily Scrum). By removing roadblocks in the team's Scrum process and providing guidance during daily Scrum meetings or other venues, Scrum Masters help the team produce high-value products.
  2. During planning sessions for iterations and sprints, guard against scope creep and overcommitting by the team. Help with estimation and task division.
  3. Participate in the meeting and record inputs during the sprint reviews.
  4. Retrospectives: List areas that need improvement and tasks for upcoming sprints.
  5. Administration of the Scrum board - Act as the Scrum board administrator. Verify that the cards are current and the Scrum tool—whether Jira software or another—is operating well.
  6. 1-on-1s - Have private meetings with team members and stakeholders. Solve team disputes over procedures and working methods. While many Scrum practitioners are against 1-on-1 meetings because they think these exchanges should take place during standups, specific teams, especially young teams, prefer to have these frequent in-person meetings with select team members. These one-on-one exchanges may be deemed essential for team building and getting to know one another by the Scrum master.
  7. Internal Consultation - Scrum Masters should be ready to consult with internal stakeholders and team members about how to operate effectively with the Scrum team.

Difference between a Scrum Master and a project manager

Scrum Masters and Project managers share the same goal of assisting their teams in working well. Their methods for achieving this objective differ.

The position of a project manager is more conventional in nature. For instance, they put a lot of emphasis on project timetables, milestones, and progress reports. They are goal-oriented and concentrate on leading the team from the top down in order to accomplish the objective.

Scrum Masters, in contrast, focus on the process. The Scrum Master focuses on streamlining and optimizing the procedures that enable teams to achieve their goals rather than imposing a set of constraints and goals on a team to keep it on track. They approach management from the ground up and see themselves as team members rather than team managers.
