Climatic changes like late seasons, and unusual climatic conditions are happening worldwide. To avoid such situations, many countries are moving towards renewable energy usage. The current UNEP Executive Director, Inger Andersen, stated, “Instead of depleting precious resources and polluting the environment, renewable energy meets the objectives of a circular economy and is a strong motor for social and economic development.” These strong words reflect the current scenario and state the right required action. The actions are nothing but moving towards renewable energy production and usage.

Every sustained nation has taken a step forward towards using renewable energy. The US is also one among them, having made remarkable strides in the last decade. The US government has recently decided to remove fossil fuel energy usage by 2035. The government has set a target to generate 80% of renewable energy. To get a 100% carbon emission-free country. Following the agile method is the only way to handle such a transformation. Since many teams are involved in this agile transition. A certified scrum masters are required to manage the transition. I would like to share my opinions on how an accredited scrum master can handle such a vital transition.

Why United States is Looking for Renewable Energy?

At present many people use non-renewable energy, which generates greenhouse gases. These gases affect not only the US but also the whole world. Many climatic changes, like melting snowcaps and air pollution, are everywhere.

In US, the source of non-renewable energy started reducing due to its continuous usage. This caused the energy source to reach the extinction stage. To save the country's resources and reduce the pollution caused by non-renewable energy. UN has announced that emissions must be controlled by 2030 to reduce the greenhouse effect. They found more beneficial results that are possible through taking sustainable energy like:

  • Renewable energy usage could create jobs, lower energy costs, and boost the country's economy. Because of these benefits, the US took further steps towards using renewable energy.

  • Generating energy from sustainable sources allows the US to decrease its dependence on other nations for fuel sources.

  • This transition towards renewable energy can secure a risk-free future for everyone. It can also help avoid air pollution, climatic changes, and fossil fuel extinction.

Altogether, the US Renewable Energy transition began. There are so many different departments involved in the transition.

These many different departments and government agencies work together in the transition process. The US government is researching renewable energies and the various methods used.

The US Renewable Energy transition is about sustainable energy development from different sources. After many crucial adoptions, the US has been on the right track to generating renewable energy since 2022. Here are the details of different energy sources and the energy production details:

1. Wind

Wind is a sustainable energy source. Windmills produce energy from wind. In 2022, 434 terawatt-hours of electricity were produced from wind, which accounted for 48% of renewable energy production.

2. Hydro

Dams and hydropower plants convert water's kinetic force into sustainable energy. Hydro production helped generate 6.2% of the nation's electricity in 2022, 29% of total renewable energy generation.

3. Solar

Solar energy is produced from the sun when photons in sunlight fall on a solar panel. Solar renewable energy production efficiency is increasing year over year. With over 111.6 GW of PV cells installed, it generated about 3.4% of the country's electricity supply in 2022.

4. Biomass

Biomass produces energy by fermenting without oxygen or heating in a boiler to produce steam. Several other processes also produce energy. In 2022, biomass contributed 12.2 GW and held 5.4% of the country's electricity supply.

5. Geothermal

Different processes, such as dry steam power plants, flash steam power plants, and so on, are used for geothermal energy production. Geothermal energy contributes 2.6GW of electricity, 0.4% of total electricity from renewable energy sources.

The US government is boosting renewable energy production further to make it 80% of its total energy use by 2030. This goal will also remain within the US Renewable Energy transition process.

Requirement for Agile Method in Renewable Energy Transition

The US renewable energy transition is a large-scale transformation project. It involves many different departments and organizations contributing to transition. The agile method can organize the transition to a great extent with the following steps:

1. Transparency in Process

The agile method includes tools like TrelloJira, and Slack and techniques like a fixed project plan and setting priorities. These tools and techniques keep the transition process transparent. Transparency of project information and decisions makes tracking easier. If there is a backlog, transparency helps the respective departments take action.

2. Improve Collaboration

Since different departments collaborate, completing the project within a time limit is necessary. The agile method allows feedback sessions and status updates between various departments. Everyone involved in the transformation is aware of action plans to improve collaboration.

3. Continuous Improvement

The renewable energy transformation will include many new inputs after every successful research. Continuous improvement is a must-have feature for such transformation. Agile supports such types of iterative approaches.

4. Backlog Maintenance

The Agile method allows tracking of complete processes to find the backlogs during meetings and feedback sessions. The cause of the backlog is found and eradicated to avoid project delays.

These are the primary responsibilities of agile methodologies in an organization's transformation. A certified scrum master effectively monitors these transformations.

Role of Certified Scrum Master in Transition

A certified scrum master (CSM) can help the US renewable energy agile transition. CSMs perform crucial functions that can help the government manage the project. Scrum masters can guide individuals in understanding and applying Scrum principles in real-world scenarios. They perform a sequence of actions to check the transition state, report the status and keep the transition live. CSMs are responsible for the following actions:

1. Helping Government with Agile Adoption

The CSM can guide the different departments in adopting agile methods. They can explain the roles and help employees understand specific needs and constraints. The CSM must also guide teams in transitioning from traditional waterfall model approaches to Agile methods. They must also provide knowledge of compliance and regulatory requirements.

2. Coaching Cross-functional Teams

Cross-functional collaboration is a must because this involves many departments, contractors, and government employees. CSM should Identify and address impediments to Agile adoption. Continuous inputs on job roles must be stated by the CSM to the team members.

3. Ensuring Compliance

Renewable energy transformation is in the evolving stage, and compliance will be a significant concern. CSM should ensure that Agile practices are under government regulations and procurement.

4. Delivery Plan

CSM should promote delivering functional increments of value rather than waiting for a big release. This delivery type will help collect user feedback and find any changes. The required changes are made to the upcoming deliverables.

5. Bridging Communication Gaps

CSM acts as a liaison between different teams and maintains the requirement lists. Government leaders can understand Agile metrics and make decisions. If the communication is low, the project delivery will be affected.

Real-World Examples: Agile Success Stories in the US Government

The U.S. government has implemented Agile methodologies in various departments.

The US Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) was adopting agile practices. This approach helped with successful collaborations among businesses, universities, and research labs.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has developed an Agile Assessment Guide to assist federal agencies. This guide outlines best practices for Agile adoption in various sectors. Adopting Agile across federal agencies shows a positive trend towards effective project management.

These examples are evidence of the agile capabilities in transformation.

Challenges in Following Agile and Remedies

The renewable energy transformation process requires many processes. Whenever there are more processes, the challenges also increase. Here are some possible challenges during the transition and their remedies.

1. Uncertain Market Dynamics

Inflation and other changes can affect policy viability and timelines.

To overcome this problem, use agile’s iterative method. It will provide continuous review processes, help adapt to market changes, and follow the backlogs.

2. Geographical Divergence

Renewable energy projects are planned in remote areas, making collaboration across teams difficult.

The government must use digital collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams and Slack. This process can create a hybrid Agile model supporting remote and on-site teams.

3. Time-consuming Prototyping Process

Physical testing of prototypes like wind turbines or solar panels can be intensive and time-consuming.

Use Agile prototyping methods like digital twins and simulations to test iteratively. This type of testing before physical implementation can save cost and time.

4. Long Project Timelines

Renewable energy projects, such as wind farms or solar installations, are in the research phase because they are evolving. The projects' spans take several years, making iterative progress challenging.

Break down long-term goals into smaller and more achievable goals using Agile sprints. Ensure incremental value in delivery can also be effective.

5. Rapid Technological Advancements

Constant innovation possibilities in renewable technologies can cause scope creep and shifting requirements. For a flexible product backlog, consider using new technologies with Agile’s “inspect and adapt” approach. A CSM in every department can contribute to US renewable energy transformation by executing the guidelines.
