When you take up agile scrum master certification program, you will learn about roles and responsibilities of a certified scrum master, and the 12 principles of agile methodology. In this blog, we will see the differences between Agile and Scrum.

Before we discuss the difference let us understand the basics of Agile and Scrum methodology. Interchangeably agile and scrum methodology is used.

Agile methodology

This came as a boon 2 decades before that resolves the shortcomings of the traditional waterfall method. In this method, every phase in an SDLC happens in concurrence. This method is called an iterative approach where after every development testing happens and all other process follows.

Scrum Methodology

Scrum is one of the frameworks used to implement the agile methodology. In this method, time frames are defined for every action. There are few stages followed like

• Daily standup meeting – All team members meet daily to discuss what is over and what next

Sprint planning – Planning of the task for the entire task

• Sprint review meeting – Review after every sprint to understand what next

• Sprint retrospective – Meeting to understand what went wrong to make changes in the upcoming sprint.

You can find the primary difference between Agile and scrum in the below table. However, with timelines, we can call agile methodology as scrum method itself

 AgileScrum
What is it?Agile refers to a group of software development programs including scrum, extreme programming (XP), and rational unified process. This iterative software development model is actually a subset of Agile – a framework is used to implement Agile.
Advantages
Shorter planning cycles allow for better refining and feedback implementation
Encourages team interaction and builds team spirit
Suitable for projects where the end goal is not clearly defined
Clients can get periodic updates about the project
Daily stand up meetings ensure better team interaction and improved transparency
Each person has a well-defined role, which increases accountability of every team member
Constant communication and faster feedback implementations reduce unwanted expenses
Everyone on the team understands the nuances and details of the project
DisadvantagesWithout set deadline, planning and execution can become difficult and delayed.
No importance is given to documentation, which can affect current and future projects.
Final result could be very different from the initially expected outcome. This could become a problem if the client doesn’t like the end result.

As there is no set deadline, procrastination can develop.
The success of the project could become dependent on the certified scrum master.

Process StepsThe steps in the agile methodology development cycle are Requirement analysis, design, implementation (coding or development), testing, and deployment. The steps in scrum methodology are product backlog, sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily scrum meetings, sprint review meetings, and sprint retrospective meeting.
